Christ Corrects the Called

“Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline.  So be earnest, and repent.” – Revelation 3:19

“The people I love, I call to account – prod and correct and guide so that they’ll live at their best.  Up on your feet, then!  Run after God!” – (The Message)

Just as loving parents correct and redirect their children, providing boundaries and parameters for right living, so does our Heavenly Father with us – His sons and daughters.  When He brings our bumblings before us, we need to whole-heartedly repent, so right relationship with our Redeemer may again be restored.

His love for us is displayed through discipline.  If He did not love us, He would allow us to keep playing with fire, by which we will ultimately be burned.  Rather, in love, He reminds us of the ruin that will come if we remain in our rebellious state.  He seeks to save us from ourselves, but we must embrace both His encouragement and His discipline.  Both are designed to build us up before Him, and to restore right relationship with Him.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that because of Your great love for us and Your deep desire for us to spend all of eternity with You, You rebuke and discipline us; calling us to repent so that we will not be ruined by our own rebellion.  Lead us, Lord, to earnestly seek You as our Source of both direction and correction, so that we do not stray from the straight and narrow path.  Teach us to hear Your heart and humble ourselves before You, admitting the errors in our ways, and our desperate need for Your guidance and direction.  Thank You for loving us so lavishly that we may lean on and learn from You, even as You discipline and redirect our steps.  May our earnest seeking and honest repenting encourage others to trust You to help turn them from the err in their ways too.  Amen.
