“They will fight against you but not overcome you for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord. – (Jeremiah 1:19, NIV)

“They will fight you, but they will fail. For I am with you, and I will take care of you. I, the Lord, have spoken! – (Jeremiah 1:19, NLT)

Eventually, they will all give you trouble, but you will be safe. They will fight you, but they will not win. Remember, I am with you. I promise I will always deliver you. – (Jeremiah 1:19, VOICE)

Though these words were spoken by God to Jeremiah in a time of great turmoil, His promise still remains true for all who trust in Him. Trouble and trials will come our way, as it is part of living in a broken world. However, the Lord will be with us and will care for us, and will not allow us to be overcome if we place our trust in Him. God is the same yesterday, today and forever, so His word remains steadfast and secure. May we seek the Lord and place our trust in Him, knowing that He will be with us and will care for us in all things and at all times.

Opposition comes,Seeking Solace in the Storm

Fear not, it will fail;

When we trust in God,

His strength shall prevail.

For the Lord is good,

His promises true;

He will keep us close,

And carry us through.

Let all that draws breath,

Seek God and give praise;

For His faithfulness,

Throughout all our days.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that when we seek You and place our trust in You, You take care of us and rescue us from falling in the fight. Thank You that You are our strength and our supply, and that You promise to remain present as You walk us through whatever comes our way. Forgive us for not seeking You for strength and security when struggles come. Teach us to turn and trust You more. Show us how to love those around us with the faithfulness and endurance that You give to each of us. May many come into a lasting relationship with You. Be glorified O God, as we trust You to be our strength and our rescue in the midst of life’s storms. Amen.

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. – Psalm 23:6

The Lord is close to all who call on Him, yes, to all who call on Him in truth. – (Psalm 145:18, NLT)

The Lord is near to everyone who sincerely calls to Him for help. – (Psalm 145:18, ERV)

God’s there, listening for all who pray, for all who pray and mean it. – (Psalm 145:18, MSG)

God does not force His way into our lives, but rather waits lovingly, to be invited. When we get real with God and honestly call on Him, He hears our cries and comes close to be our help and our hope. The more we know Him, the greater our understanding becomes of our own need. Yes, we need the Lord to strengthen and help us in times of trial and trouble, but we also need His nearness to navigate our every day lives according to His will. May we call on the Lord in truth as we recognize our need for His ongoing nearness.

Believe Instead of Striving

The Lord He is close,

To all who choose call;

In transparent truth,

Choose tell the Lord all.

For He will listen,

To all those who pray;

Peace and His presence,

As He shows the way.

So call on the Lord,

In all times and things;

His help is our hope,

As only God brings.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that You are near to all who call on You in truth. Thank You that as we sincerely pray, You hear our cries and come close to help and bring hope. Forgive us for not trusting You enough to cry out to You in our need. Teach us to trust You more, so that we would call on You in all things and at all times, as we need You, always. Show us how to love those around us in such a way, that they might see the hope we hold in You. May many come into a lasting relationship with You. Be glorified O God, as we pray to You with sincere hearts, and know Your nearness as You are faithful to answer. Amen.

God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me. – Genesis 21:6

Then Jesus said, “Come to Me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” – (Matthew 11:28, NLT)

“Come to Me, all you who are struggling hard and carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest.” – (Matthew 11:28, CEB)

Though the holiday season is busy, as an educator I am blessed with a break that is long enough to actually slow down, set aside the weight of what wears me out, and really rest. There is time to catch up on the little things that need doing around the house, and I am able to sleep longer hours than I ordinarily do. These are the sort of things that lighten the load when the time comes to return to school again, as I will go back rested with less on the list that seems to hang over my head. The incredible thing about the promise in these words spoken by Jesus, is that a vacation is not required to go to Him and hand over our burdens and allow Him to grant us rest. He willingly and lovingly will help handle the load that we are bearing, and provide opportunity for us to find rest in Him. In Him, our strength is renewed and our load is lightened, even in the busiest of times. May we look to the Lord who is our strength, and take our burdens before Him, trusting that He is the One who will grant us the rest that we need.

Ever He calls us,IMG_0439

The weary and worn;

To come close to Him,

With strength, He’ll adorn.

He will grant us rest,

From the weight we bear;

No more to struggle,

The burden, He’ll share.

Come all you weary,

For Jesus is best;

His arms are open,

In love, He’ll grant rest.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that You call us to come to You when we are weary and worn from bearing heavy burdens, and You give us rest. Thank You that Your shoulders are far stronger than ours, and that no burden is too heavy for You to bear. Forgive us for attempting to carry the weight of the world on our own shoulders, rather than seeking and trusting You. Teach us to trust You more, so that we would bring our burdens before You, asking You for help and hope and strength, so that we would only carry that which we are called to carry, and set aside that which we are not. Show us how to love those around us in a way that lightens loads and shines hope in dark places. May many come into a lasting relationship with You. Be glorified O God, as we come to You with our heavy burdens, and receive the rest that You have for us. Amen.

The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. – Galatians 5:22-23

I lift up my eyes to the mountains – where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. – (Psalm 121:1-2, NIV)

I look up to the hills, but where will my help really come from? My help will come from the Lord, the Creator of heaven and earth. – (Psalm 121:1-2, ERV)

For me, there is nothing like getting out in nature to regain perspective as to who God is, and how awesome His power and might. All it takes is a glimpse of the crashing waves of the ocean or the mighty peaks that rise before me, to realize how great He is and how small I am. This morning, I have the opportunity to go and reset. In the midst of the madness of Christmas shoppers and chaos all around the city, some dear friends and I are going to escape for a few hours to hike in the snowy woods. Fresh air and the beauty of God’s creation await. I cannot think of a better way to spend my morning on this wonderful Wednesday before Christmas. May you all have an opportunity to find rest and reset amidst the madness, and recognize how great our God is, and from where our help is found.

As I lift my eyes,i-look-up

What is it I see?

The glory of God,

Created for me.

The very same hands,

That made earth and sea;

Are ready to help,

All who choose seek Thee.

Our help comes from Him,

The Lord above all;

Who loves us to life,

And lifts when we fall.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the glorious gift of Your creation. Thank You that the very same hands that hung the stars in the sky are willing to come close and hold our hearts. Forgive us for not looking to You to be our help, or for neglecting to recognize the majesty of all that You have made. Teach us to see You and Your creation with a holy perspective, so that we would recognize how great and mighty You are. Show us how to love fiercely, so that others too, will be led to look to You as their Source of help and hope. May many come into a lasting relationship with You. Be glorified O God, as we look up to You to be our help in all things. Amen.

As you know, we consider blessed those who have persevered. – James 5:11

He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless. – (Isaiah 40:29, NLT)

He helps the tired people be strong. He gives power to those without it. – (Isaiah 40:29, ERV)

When we are tired, weary and worn, God provides the strength we need to do that which we are called to do. He equips and empowers in the places where we are lacking, so that we may rise in His strength to walk according to His will. Even in the places where we feel powerless to persevere, Christ comes close and gives what we lack, as we lean on Him. May we look to the Lord to be our strength, and seek Him to provide the power we need to keep moving the direction in which we have been called, despite weariness or lack. Let us lean on Him, for He provides power and strength to persevere.

When our strength is gone,Healed Hands Reach Out

The Lord’s ever near;

He grants us power,

To rise, persevere.

For God is our strength,

When we are without;

He gives what we need,

Removes space of doubt.

For there is nothing,

That God cannot do;

All Powerful One,

With a heart for you.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that You give power in our weakness and strength when our strength is gone. Thank You that You are faithful to meet us wherever we are, and that You see and know our need. Forgive us for our lack of trust, or for allowing our own weakness to define the road we walk, rather than allowing You to do in and through us, that which we cannot fathom on our own. Teach us to trust You more, so that we would faithfully seek You and Your strength as we move forward in trust to the places that You are leading. Show us how to love those around us in a way that strengthens and encourages hearts and minds. May many come into a lasting relationship with You. Be glorified O God, as we trust You to be our power and strength where we are lacking. Amen.

Your righteousness reaches to the skies, O God, You who have done great things. Who, O God, is like You? – Psalm 71:19

As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend. – (Proverbs 27:17, NLT)

In the same way that iron sharpens iron, a person sharpens the character of his friend. – (Proverbs 27:17, VOICE)

I love the imagery of this verse. Being such a visual learner, this paints a clear picture for me, the need and purpose in having close and trusted friends in our lives. In order for iron to sharpen iron, it has to be in close proximity. The same is true with friends. We cannot know one another’s struggles, needs nor triumphs, if we are not near. Second, there is a rubbing or a sort of friction that must occur for the places that have become dull to grow sharp again. It is not so different with people. We have to be willing to allow one another access to the spots in our hearts, minds and lives that have grown dull, so that they may challenge us to move forward or retreat in the spaces that will help bring clarity and sharpness so that we can be all that we have been created to be. We need people to walk beside us who are willing to challenge, encourage, and remain near. May we each be iron that sharpens those around us, and willing to allow others access to do the same for us.

That which can sharpen,MSH35

Iron is itself;

The same element,

Is what sharpens well.

It’s in the same way,

That people stay true;

One to another,

Side by side made new.

For our character,

Can best be refined;

By those allowed near,

And with truth aligned.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of friendships. Thank You that You use our trusted friendships to sharpen one another to more clearly reflect Your character and heart within us. Forgive us for not allowing others near when we need it most, and teach us to trust You more, as You place people in our lives with purpose. Show us whom we are to trust and allow near, and help us to encourage and sharpen those around us in love. May many come into a lasting relationship with You. Be glorified O God, as we sharpen one another to more clearly reflect Your heart to those around us. Amen.

Father, I thank You that You have heard me. – John 11:41

I love the Lord because He hears my voice and my prayer for mercy. Because He bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I live. – (Psalm 116:1-2, NLT)

I love the Lord for hearing me, for listening to my prayers. Yes, He paid attention to me, so I will always call to Him whenever I need help. – (Psalm 116:1-2, ERV)

God is faithful to hear our prayers. Over and over again, I can tell of the times that He has met me in my moments of need, and given the strength, courage, wisdom, resources or care that I needed most to move forward from my place of deficit. He listens to our every call, and comes close, so that we are made aware of His nearness. Though He may not always answer the way we anticipate, He is always faithful, and forever true. Because His love and faithfulness will not end, neither will my prayers. May we seek the Lord in all things and at all times, for He is faithful to listen to our every petition presented before Him.

From our place of need,Refreshment Through Repentance

The Lord hears our cry;

We need never ask,

For His word won’t lie.

Each prayer that we lift,

The heart of God hears;

As close as our breath,

He is ever near.

Our help and our hope,

Most merciful God;

He loves us to life,

Despite all our flaws.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that You hear our every prayer – for mercy, for help and for hope. Thank You that You listen and love us to life. Forgive me for the times that I neglect to present my petitions before You. Teach me to trust You more, as You alone are the One who is my help and my hope in all things and at all times. Show me how to love others in such a way, that I may be Your hands, heart and voice to convey mercy and faithfulness that points straight to You. May many come into a lasting relationship with You. Be glorified O God, as we love You with all that we are, and lift our prayers before You. Amen.

Let love and faithfulness never leave you; …write them on the tablet of your heart. – Proverbs 3:3

I always remember that the Lord is with me. He is here, close by my side, so nothing can defeat me. – (Psalm 16:8, ERV)

I know the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken, for He is right beside me. – (Psalm 16:8, NLT)

No matter where we go or what we are facing, we are never alone. When we have invited Christ to be Lord of our lives, He remains present to be our help and our strength. I love that He cares about even the little details. Yesterday, I walked into a situation that I was nervous about; not because it was bad, nor dangerous – just that it was new and unknown, and I was uneasy. He was with me, and postured people appropriately to put my heart at ease. As I left my experience, I found my heart full of gratitude for the grace that I had been given, and the care I had been shown. The Lord is as close as our next breath, and will never leave us nor forsake us. He is faithful, and I am grateful. May we ever place our trust in Him.

The Lord, He is good,Enter With Thanksgiving

He always remains;

My help and my hope,

With strength, He sustains.

I won’t be shaken,

With God by my side;

As He is for me,

In Him, I’ll abide.

Always remember,

In love the Lord reigns;

With our God for us,

No fear can remain.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that You are with us, close beside us so that nothing can shake us. Thank You that You are our Defender and our strength. Forgive us for our fear and lack of faith. Teach us to trust You more, so that we would not forget how much greater You are than anything that may lie before us. Show us how to love others in such a way, that they might see Your faithfulness through us. May many come into a lasting relationship with You. Be glorified O God, as we trust in Your nearness, always. Amen.

May God be gracious to us and bless us and make His face shine upon us. – Psalm 67:1

The Lord is good, a strong refuge when trouble comes. He is close to those who trust in Him. – (Nahum 1:7, NLT)

The Lord is good. He is a safe place to go in times of trouble. He takes care of those who trust Him. – (Nahum 1:7, ERV)

When troubles come, there is no greater feeling than knowing that we have a safe place to land where we will be cared for and helped. God often provides people to help make His hell and nearness tangible, but ultimately, it is The Lord alone who is our refuge and strength. Because He is good, He chooses to be near to all who trust in Him. We have the blessed assurance that no matter what comes our way, we have safety and strength in our Savior. May we trust in the goodness of God, and allow His care to carry us when calamity comes near.
The Lord is so good,

 His presence is clear;

Our refuge and strength,

When trouble comes near.

He’s promised to be,

Close to all who trust;

He grants all we need,

Our loving Jesus.

Choose run to The Lord,

In trial and peace;

His grace, hope and love,

Set fearful hearts free.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that You are so good. Thank You that You are our strong refuge when troubles come. Thank You that You are close and You care for us as we trust in You. Forgive us for not running to the safety of Your arms when trouble comes our way. Teach us to trust You more. Show us how to love others in a way that we are extending Your hands and heart to those in need. May many come into a lasting relationship with You. Be glorified O God, as we trust You to be our refuge. Amen.

I have chosen the way of faithfulness; I have set my heart on Your laws. – (Psalm 119:30, NIV)

As one season comes to a close, and another begins anew, I must choose again to set my heart on pursuing the path that the Lord has placed before me. Though I am uncertain of all that includes, I know that my part is to choose to obey that which He asks, and to keep Him as my priority in all things. Whatever I do, I must ask myself if it is pleasing to Him, and if there is a way to give Him glory through it. I don’t mean this in a hyper-spiritual sense, but rather am I doing what I was created to do? For example, when I am outdoors and moving, I see and know the glory of His creation, and feel His pleasure in the freedom I have to challenge my body, physically. When I teach, I know that to be faithful to Him, I must be kind and compassionate, and love each student, no matter how they come through my classroom door. In newer arenas, there is a learning curve for what His way looks like, but I know that if I choose to seek Him, He will show me the way to walk in His truth. May we each choose the way of faithfulness to our Heavenly Father, and set our hearts on His laws. As we are faithful to follow the Lord, we come to know His pleasure in our pursuit of Him.

May we choose the way,Our Map and Our Guide

Of true faithfulness;

With hearts set on Christ,

Light of righteousness.

Let our eyes be set,

On doing what’s right;

According to God,

Let us live in His light.

For in the sweet space,

Of obedience;

We remain faithful,

To all that He asks.

Help our hearts, dear Lord,

To do as You say;

To go where You lead,

And walk in Your way.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that when we choose to faithfully seek You, You grant us the strength and help that we need to walk in Your ways. Thank You that You write Your laws upon our hearts when we invest our time in being in Your presence. Forgive us for neglecting to seek You in all things, or for setting aside what we know to be true for temporary gain. Teach us to trust You in all things and at all times, so that we would choose faithfulness in ALL things. Show us how to walk in Your truth at all times, and how to love others in such a way, that they can see You through us. May many come into a lasting relationship with You. Be glorified O God, as we choose the way of faithfulness and set our hearts on Your laws. Amen.
