The underlying theme in what God has been teaching me in recent weeks is just how great His love is for me, individually. There is nothing that I can do to earn it or make it increase; rather His love has been there for me since before I was ever even conceived. He has known me and loved me for all time, and there is nothing I can do to separate or take away that love. I do not have to perform, nor achieve a certain level of holiness, to gain access to His abundant love for me. He has pursued me since birth, and has showered His mercy and grace upon me all of my days.
As a woman who has strived to achieve academically and athletically for as long as I can recall, I am discovering that though I know I do not have to earn His favor, or be “enough” in my head, my heart is still learning to decipher the memo… It is indeed good and right to do everything as unto the Lord, bringing our very best to all that we do; yet He is not watching over us waiting for us to slack off, so that He might remove the goodness and grace that He has so freely and generously given.
“For the Lord is good and His love endures forever; His faithfulness continues through all generations.” – Psalm 100:5 (NIV) The Message says it this way, “For God is sheer beauty, all-generous in love, loyal always and ever.”
Knowing that He is good and that His love is forever, is only the beginning. He is faithful always, and loyal and generous to the end. Yes, He wants me to give Him my whole heart, and all that I am, yet His love does not depend on it. His covering is not conditional on our correctness. If we are in pursuit of Him, even when we falter, His love is unfailing. It does not fail. It does not falter. It is forever for each of us who call on His Name and invite Him to be our heavenly Father. He who is love, gives love that lasts.
Perhaps my point is simply that I am beyond grateful that I am gaining greater glimpses of just how great God’s love is for me. Neither life nor death, nor anything in all of creation, can separate us from the love of God. His heart is for us, and His help, are ever within our grasp. He longs to lavish us in His great love. When we are still and we are available to receive all that He has for us, He comes. He willingly and intentionally whispers words that give life and encourage our hearts.
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that Your love is unending and Your grace for us is far greater than we can even begin to imagine. May we be still before You so that we each may hear Your heart for us, as Your beloved children. Thank You that You call us sons and daughters. Thank you that You call us friends. Thank You that in You, we are enough, and You long to lavish us in Your perfect love. Teach us to receive all that You have for us, and as we are filled, may we extend that loyal and lasting love to all who cross our path. Amen.
